34 Once the old Rail head for the North Australian Railway in WWll and also the staging site for WWll servicemen in the 1940s, but now just a small town beside the Stuart hwy and home of the Big Stubby! You’ll find Larrimah about 180klms south of Katherine ,it’s by no means a large place but one with character. The main gathering point is the Larrimah Wayside Inn which was the original pub at Birdum but moved to Larrimah years ago.
On the occasions we have visited we have always enjoyed a chat with the locals and other travelers. The Hotel has a interesting collection of bits & pieces as well as a small zoo, some of the animals in the zoo have been bought in after being hit on the road and then nursed back to health.
Opposite the Hotel is the Larrimah Museum which displays photographs and interpretive text of the World War II Gorrie Airfield which you’ll also find just down the road from Larrimah. The display at the museum also highlights the impact WWll had on this region.
If you are lucky enough you can go for a ride down the disused railway line to Birdum ,at he moment it only goes about 5klms down the track the other couple of klms of track still needs to be cleared but once that is cleared it will take you to the old town site of Birdum, where once allot of Darwin’s civilian population were transported to, after the bombing of Darwin. Very little remains of the place now though.
Getting ready to ride down the old track from Larrimah to Birdum about 9klms away but so far only 5klms has been cleared
